Adult Training

In Scouting America, adult volunteers play a vital role in shaping the experiences and development of youth. To ensure that every Scout benefits from a safe, enriching, and well-organized program, adult leaders are required to complete a series of essential trainings. These trainings not only equip volunteers with the knowledge and skills needed to fulfill their roles effectively but also reinforce the values and safety standards that define Scouting.

Safeguarding Youth Training

Replacing the former Youth Protection Training, Safeguarding Youth Training is now mandatory for all registered adult volunteers. Developed with input from child safety experts, law enforcement, and psychologists, this 90-minute course emphasizes active supervision, situational awareness, and emergency preparedness. Volunteers must score at least 80% on the final assessment and complete a 15-minute refresher annually to remain certified. This training is foundational to Scouting America’s commitment to creating a secure environment for all youth participants.

Position-Specific Training

Each adult role—whether it’s a den leader, troop committee member, or Scoutmaster—requires Position-Specific Training tailored to its responsibilities. This training provides clarity on expectations, safety protocols, and leadership techniques. It ensures that volunteers understand the Scouting program’s goals and methods, enabling them to deliver engaging, educational, and consistent experiences across units.

BALOO and IOLS

Outdoor skills are central to the Scouting experience. BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) is required for at least one adult on any Cub Scout overnight activity. It covers camping basics, safety, and program planning. IOLS (Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills) is designed for Scouts BSA leaders and includes hands-on instruction in fire building, map reading, first aid, and more. These trainings ensure that leaders are prepared to guide youth safely and confidently in outdoor settings.

Wood Badge

Wood Badge is Scouting America’s premier leadership training for adult volunteers. It goes beyond basic skills to focus on team development, communication, and servant leadership. Participants engage in immersive experiences that challenge them to grow personally and professionally, ultimately enhancing the quality of their units and the broader Scouting movement. Wood Badge alumni often become key mentors and trainers within their councils, helping sustain a culture of excellence and commitment.
