Scouting America’s mission to prepare young people for life begins with ensuring their safety. The newly launched Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) replaces the former Youth Protection Training (YPT) and is now mandatory for all registered adult volunteers. This enhanced training reflects Scouting America’s unwavering commitment to creating a secure, respectful, and enriching environment for every Scout.
Developed with insights from child safety experts, law enforcement, and psychologists, SYT equips volunteers with the tools to recognize, prevent, and respond to potential threats. It emphasizes active supervision, situational awareness, and proactive safety planning, aligning with Scouting America’s SAFE framework: Supervision, Assessment, Fitness and Skill, and Equipment and Environment.

Why This Training Matters
According to Glen Pounder, Scouting America’s Chief Safeguarding Officer, “There is new material in SYT that could genuinely save the life of a youth—inside or outside of Scouting.” The training goes beyond abuse prevention to address broader safety concerns, including online threats, physical hazards, and emotional well-being.
SYT is not just a requirement—it’s a reflection of Scouting’s values. By completing this training, adult volunteers demonstrate their commitment to protecting youth, modeling responsible leadership, and fostering a culture of vigilance and care.
