IOLS

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) is a required hands-on training course for Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, and other adult leaders in the Scouts BSA program. Offered by the Lincoln Heritage Council, this course equips volunteers with the outdoor skills needed to lead safe, engaging, and educational camping experiences. Whether you’re new to Scouting or a seasoned volunteer, IOLS ensures you’re prepared to support youth in developing confidence, teamwork, and self-reliance in the outdoors.

What You’ll Learn

During IOLS, participants camp overnight and work in patrols to learn and practice essential outdoor skills, including:

  • Camp setup and site selection
  • Outdoor cooking and campfire safety
  • First aid and nature awareness
  • Map and compass navigation
  • Knife, axe, and saw safety (Totin’ Chip skills)
  • Fire building, knots, lashings, and orienteering
  • Understanding the patrol method and youth-led leadership

These skills mirror the requirements for Scouts to earn their First Class rank, and help leaders model the outdoor program that is central to Scouting America’s mission.

IOLS Training Opportunities

The Lincoln Heritage Council offers IOLS training twice each fall:

  • September 12–13, 2025 at Tunnel Mill Scout Reservation
  • October 10–11, 2025 at Camp Crooked Creek – Brotherhood Lodge
  • Cost: $30 per participant
  • Registration: Register for IOLS Training

These sessions are designed to align with fall recruiting and onboarding, making it easy for new leaders to get trained quickly.

Why IOLS Matters

Scouting’s outdoor program is where youth learn resilience, leadership, and teamwork. IOLS ensures that adult leaders are ready to support these experiences safely and effectively. Even if you weren’t a Scout growing up, IOLS will leave you feeling like a seasoned camper—ready to teach, lead, and inspire.
