About Us
Scouting America is one of the largest Scouting organizations in the United States of America and one of the largest youth organizations in the United States, with more than 2.4 million youth participants and nearly one million adult volunteers. Scouting America was founded in 1910, and since then, more than 110 million Americans have been participants in Scouting America programs at some time. Scouting America is part of the international Scout Movement and became a founding member organization of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1922.
The Scouting legacy of 4012 in New Albany, Indiana, began in 1982 with the founding of Cub Scout Pack 12 at Graceland Baptist Church. The pack was established by community leaders Bobby Wagner, Joe Jenkins, Bob Stepro, and Pete Zorno, under the George Rogers Clark Council, which served Southern Indiana until its merger in the early 1990s.
In 1984, Boy Scout Troop 12 was formed, utilizing equipment from the closing Troop 99, helping the new troop launch with essential resources.
In 1988, Explorer Post 12 was started by Denny James, offering older youth opportunities for leadership and career exploration. When the Boy Scouts of America reorganized the Exploring program in 1998, the post transitioned into a Venturing Crew, continuing its mission under the new structure.
A major change occurred in 1993, when the George Rogers Clark Area Council, based in New Albany, merged with the Old Kentucky Home Council to form the Lincoln Heritage Council. To avoid confusion with similarly numbered units in Kentucky, the New Albany units adopted the number 4012, becoming Pack 4012, Troop 4012, and Crew 4012.
In 2019, the program expanded again with the formation of Girls Troop 4012, led by Scoutmaster Mark Adams, providing young women in the area the opportunity to participate fully in the Scouts BSA program.
In 2025, the units of 4012 were rechartered by Grace Lutheran Church in New Albany, Indiana. Grace Lutheran has been a part of the Southern Indiana community since 1927, and now serves as the meeting place for the units, continuing their mission of youth development and service.
